If you are mapping out Purdue PharmD prerequisites, you are looking at the Doctor of Pharmacy program at the Purdue University College of Pharmacy in West Lafayette, Indiana. It is a four-year professional program that follows about two years of pre-pharmacy coursework. You do not have to be a Purdue student to apply. Purdue’s PharmD program page says applicants must complete Purdue’s two-year pre-pharmacy program “or the equivalent coursework at another accredited institution,” and every applicant goes through PharmCAS.
Quick answer: Purdue’s PharmD lists 14 course areas, which add up to 64 semester hours. PrereqCourses lists UIU courses for many of them, including CHEM 151, CHEM 152, CHEM 251, CHEM 252, BIO 135, BIO 140, BIO 270, BIO 275, BIO 210, CHEM 330, MATH 120 and MATH 220. Credit appears on a UIU transcript. PrereqCourses does not guarantee that Purdue will accept any course, and admission decisions rest entirely with Purdue.
The list is long. Purdue asks for 14 course areas, which adds up to 64 semester hours, and a few items catch applicants from other schools off guard: immunology, calculus, economics, and separate written and oral communication courses. This guide covers each requirement, the grade and GPA floors, what Purdue does not publish about online labs, and the Dec. 1 PharmCAS deadline. For a broader view first, see our overview of pharmacy prerequisites.
Where self-paced coursework can fill a gap, PrereqCourses offers courses through Upper Iowa University (UIU), which is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Credit appears on a UIU transcript. PrereqCourses does not guarantee that Purdue will accept any course, and admission decisions rest entirely with Purdue.

Purdue’s undergraduate and PharmD FAQs add that you need a C minus or higher in every pre-pharmacy core math and science course: biology, chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, calculus, physics, and statistics.
The course details that trip people up
Many pre-pharmacy students have the chemistry and biology sequences done. The questions usually come from the rest of the list.
Immunology and its substitutes
Immunology is the most unusual of the Purdue PharmD prerequisites, and Purdue gives you options. Instead of immunology, it accepts three semester hours of upper-level credit in molecular biology, cancer biology, genetics, or cellular biology. The words “upper-level” matter. An introductory genetics or cell biology course may not qualify, so check the course number and level against your school’s catalog and ask Purdue before you count it.
Calculus and statistics are separate
Purdue lists three semester hours of calculus and three of statistics as two separate requirements, so plan on two different courses. Purdue’s FAQ table lists two semesters of calculus for its own pre-pharmacy students, but the admissions page asks for three semester hours, which is one standard calculus course. We follow the admissions page here. If you have only one calculus course, it is still worth confirming with Purdue.
Economics, communication, and humanities
These non-science Purdue PharmD prerequisites are easy to overlook if you are coming from a biology or chemistry major:
- Economics: three semester hours of microeconomics, macroeconomics, or a general survey course.
- Written communication: three semester hours, usually a first-year English composition course.
- Oral communication: three semester hours, with public speaking given as the example.
- Humanities or social sciences: three semester hours.
The five-year rule
Purdue says applicants “must complete all pre-pharmacy program requirements within 5 years of application.” Purdue does not spell out how it applies that window to individual courses. If any of your prerequisites are more than about five years old, contact Purdue before you apply and ask whether you need to retake them.
The summer course limit
Applicants are “limited to two core math/science courses during the summer term immediately prior to beginning the PharmD program.” If you plan to finish prerequisites after you apply, keep no more than two core math or science courses for that final summer.
Labs, online courses, and older coursework
For the Purdue PharmD prerequisites, labs are listed with anatomy and physiology, general biology, general chemistry, microbiology, organic chemistry, and physics. Plan on a lab component for each of those.
Purdue does not publish a clear policy on online courses or online labs on its PharmD admissions page or FAQ. Do not assume online labs are accepted or rejected. Off-campus applicants and students with prior college credit are directed to Steve Myszak, Director for Professional Program Admissions and Recruitment, at (765) 494-1394 or smyszak@purdue.edu. Email him the syllabus for any online course you plan to take and confirm the course before you enroll. For a general look at how programs handle this, read can you take pharmacy prerequisites online.
Purdue’s FAQ says commonly used AP credits are accepted for pre-PharmD requirements. It also says your coursework “does not need to be fulfilled in Indiana,” and Purdue keeps plan of study guides for many schools in the state.
International applicants must have all foreign transcripts evaluated by World Education Services (WES). If you did not complete college-level English composition at a U.S. college or university, you must also submit a TOEFL score.
Purdue PharmD GPA, PCAT, experience, and letters
GPA. The admissions page sets a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and a minimum 2.0 GPA in the spring term right before you start in the fall. Missing the spring floor may remove you from the admissions process, and missing the cumulative floor will rescind an offer. The FAQ is more realistic about competitiveness. It calls 3.0 “generally the minimum considered” and reports that admitted students over the last five years averaged about a 3.50.
PCAT. Purdue does not use PCAT scores in PharmD admissions. Our guide on whether the PCAT is still required for pharmacy covers the wider trend.
Experience. Purdue reviews applicants holistically. It values employment, extracurricular activities, leadership, volunteering, and pharmacy experience. Its examples include interviewing pharmacists, shadowing pharmacists, internships, pharmacy technician jobs, and pharmaceutical research.
Letters and other pieces. The FAQ lists two required letters of evaluation, applicant statements, a personal interview, and extemporaneous written and verbal communication exercises. Purdue’s FAQ notes about 400 applications each year from eligible candidates, with a goal of accepting 150. Purdue students who finish pre-pharmacy on the West Lafayette campus can qualify for Pharmacy Priority Admission status, while the FAQ says there is no preference for in-state over out-of-state applicants.
After admission. Admitted students take part in the PharmCAS Spring Academic Update, provide required immunizations, and pass a criminal background check through Certiphi Screening.
Purdue PharmCAS deadline and interview timeline
Purdue admits PharmD students for the fall term only, and the deadline is the same whether or not you studied at Purdue. The application runs through PharmCAS from mid-July to Dec. 1, and the PharmCAS school directory lists Purdue’s deadline for the current cycle as Dec. 1, 2026, with no separate priority deadline.
| Milestone | Fall 2027 entry |
|---|---|
| PharmCAS opens | Mid-July 2026 |
| PharmCAS deadline | Dec. 1, 2026 |
| Interview invitations | End of January 2027 |
| Interviews | Mid-February 2027, in person or virtual |
| Admission decisions | By March 1, 2027 |
| Accept offer and pay deposit | Within 14 days of the letter |
| Spring grades (admitted students) | PharmCAS Spring Academic Update |
| Last summer before entry | No more than two core math or science courses |
Interviews are in person. If you are not from Purdue and cannot travel to campus, Purdue will interview you virtually. One note on dates: an older line in Purdue’s FAQ says the PharmCAS deadline is “normally the first week of January.” The admissions page and PharmCAS both say Dec. 1, so plan on Dec. 1.
Purdue does not state directly whether you can apply with prerequisites in progress. The Spring Academic Update and the two-course summer limit suggest that some coursework can finish after you apply, but confirm your exact plan with Purdue.
How to fill missing Purdue PharmD prerequisites with UIU courses
If you are missing one or more Purdue PharmD prerequisites, PrereqCourses offers self-paced, online courses with credit from Upper Iowa University. UIU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. PrereqCourses is not the accrediting body, and Purdue decides which courses count. Send the syllabus to smyszak@purdue.edu and confirm a course before you enroll.

PrereqCourses does not offer an immunology, molecular biology, cancer biology, or cell biology course. If BIO 282 does not qualify, you will need an upper-level course from another accredited school, so confirm with Purdue before you choose.
Courses are about $675 (3 credit) or $695 (4 credit with lab), and course materials are separate. Courses start on the 1st of each month, and the next start is Nov. 1, 2026.
| Your situation | Key date | Sensible UIU start | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Applying by Dec. 1, 2026, missing one or two courses | Fall 2027 entry | Nov. 1 or Dec. 1, 2026 | Aim to finish in spring so grades appear in the Spring Academic Update |
| Applying by Dec. 1, 2026, missing several courses | Fall 2027 entry | Nov. 1, 2026 to early 2027 | Tight; keep no more than two core math or science courses for summer 2027 and talk to Purdue first |
| Targeting Fall 2028 entry | PharmCAS opens mid-July 2027 | Nov. 1, 2026 to spring 2027 | Finishing before you apply lets your grades show on PharmCAS |
Self-paced course length varies, so build in a margin. Chemistry usually builds in sequence, so plan general chemistry before organic chemistry, and organic chemistry before biochemistry. Check each product page and syllabus for UIU course prerequisites.
