The Dental Hygienist Profession

Dental hygienists are licensed clinicians who provide preventive oral care, perform periodontal therapy, take and interpret radiographs, and educate patients on oral health. With a median wage near six figures, strong job security, flexible part-time options, and growing demand driven by an aging population and expanding scope of practice, dental hygiene is one of the most attractive healthcare careers you can launch with an associate's degree.

Dental Hygiene Prerequisite Requirements

CODA-accredited dental hygiene programs require a specific stack of biomedical sciences and general education courses to satisfy Standard 2-9 (biomedical sciences) and Standard 2-10 (general education). While exact requirements vary by program, the following courses appear on nearly every dental hygiene program's prerequisite list:

Anatomy & Physiology I & II

Required by every CODA program — typically 8 credits with lab

Microbiology

Required by virtually all programs — CODA Standard 2-9

General Chemistry

Most programs require Gen Chem I; some require I + II

English Composition

Most programs require Comp I; many require I + II

College Math

College algebra or higher; some accept statistics

Psychology

General Psychology required by most programs

Sociology

Principles of Sociology required by most programs

Speech / Communication

Public Speaking or Interpersonal Communication required by many programs

Note: Most programs require a minimum GPA of 2.5–3.0 in prerequisite coursework with grades of "C" or better. Many programs also require science prerequisites to be completed within the last 5 years.

Dental Hygiene Career Pathways

Most dental hygienists enter the profession through one of three pathways. PrereqCourses.com supports applicants in all three by providing the biomedical and general education prerequisites required before entering a CODA-accredited program.

Most Direct

Associate's Degree (AAS) in Dental Hygiene

Complete a CODA-accredited associate's program (typically 2 years) after fulfilling prerequisite coursework.

  • Most common entry pathway
  • 2-year program after prerequisites
  • Eligible for licensure after national board exam
Bachelor's

Bachelor's Degree (BSDH)

4-year programs leading to a bachelor's in dental hygiene, often required for educator, public health, or research roles.

  • Required for some advanced practice roles
  • Pathway into MS or DHSc programs
  • Same prerequisite foundation
Refresh

Expired Science Prerequisites

Many programs require A&P, microbiology, and chemistry to be completed within the last 5 years. Refresh expired credits without enrolling in a full degree.

  • 5-year recency rule applies at most programs
  • Re-take individual courses, not a whole degree
  • Faster and cheaper than starting over
Important: Dental hygiene program requirements vary by school and state. Always verify current prerequisites, GPA minimums, and recency rules directly with your target program's admissions office before enrolling. CODA accreditation status can be verified at the Commission on Dental Accreditation website.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to become a dental hygienist?
Most dental hygienists complete an associate's degree (AAS) from a CODA-accredited program, which typically takes 2 years after prerequisites are completed. Including prerequisite coursework, the full timeline from start to licensure is generally 2.5 to 4 years. Bachelor's-level programs (BSDH) take 4 years total.
What's the difference between a dental assistant and a dental hygienist?
Dental assistants typically complete a short training program or on-the-job training and earn a median wage around $47,300. Dental hygienists complete a CODA-accredited college program, are licensed by the state, perform clinical procedures (cleanings, periodontal therapy, radiographs), and earn a median wage around $94,260 — roughly double. Many dental assistants bridge to dental hygienist for the significant pay increase and expanded scope of practice.
Can I take dental hygiene prerequisites if my science degree is more than 5 years old?
Yes — and that's actually one of the most common reasons students enroll. Many CODA-accredited dental hygiene programs require A&P, microbiology, and chemistry to be completed within the last 5 years (some allow up to 7). Re-taking individual courses through PrereqCourses is far faster and cheaper than enrolling in a full degree program just to refresh expired credits.
Will my target dental hygiene program accept online prerequisites?
Most CODA-accredited dental hygiene programs accept prerequisite coursework from regionally accredited institutions. Our courses are delivered through Upper Iowa University, which holds regional accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Individual program policies vary — some have specific lab-component requirements — so always confirm with your target program's admissions office before enrolling.
What GPA do I need in prerequisite coursework?
Most CODA-accredited programs require a minimum GPA of 2.5–3.0 in prerequisite coursework, with grades of "C" or better in each course. Competitive programs may require GPAs of 3.3 or higher. Science prerequisites (A&P, microbiology, chemistry) are often weighted most heavily in admissions decisions.
Are biology credits required for dental hygiene school?
Yes. Most CODA programs require general biology, A&P I and II, and microbiology — typically 12–16 credits of biology total. Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology are required by virtually every program; general biology is required by many but not all.
Do I need chemistry for dental hygiene school?
Most CODA programs require General Chemistry I, and some require General Chemistry I and II. Organic chemistry and biochemistry are generally NOT required for dental hygiene programs (those are dental school requirements). Always verify your specific program's chemistry requirement before enrolling.
How long does each course take?
Because courses are fully self-paced, you control the timeline. Many students complete a single course in just 2 to 3 weeks of focused study, while others spread the work over a few months around their job and family commitments. There's no minimum or maximum pace — you can finish as quickly as you're able.
Does my dental practice employer offer tuition reimbursement?
Many large dental service organizations (DSOs) offer tuition reimbursement for dental assistants pursuing dental hygiene licensure. Heartland Dental, Aspen Dental, and Pacific Dental Services are among the employers known to support continuing education for clinical staff. Check directly with your HR department for current benefits and eligibility.
