Three steps from ESA balance to enrolled student

Arizona ESA funds are spent through ClassWallet. PrereqCourses uses the Direct Pay process, so your family never fronts the money.

1

Pick courses, request an invoice

Choose the course or bundle that fits your student's goals and tell us who it's for. We email your itemized invoice within 2 business days.

2

Submit it in ClassWallet

Upload the invoice to your ClassWallet account using Direct Pay. The Arizona Department of Education reviews and approves the expense.

3

Your student starts learning

Once payment is released, we enroll your student in the next monthly start. Courses begin the 1st of each month and are self-paced, so your student works on their own schedule.

College coursework fits the ESA's qualified expense categories, which include tuition and fees at an eligible postsecondary institution and nonpublic online learning programs. Our team walks you through your first ClassWallet submission step by step.

One course barely dents a typical award

Most Arizona students receive between $7,000 and $8,000 per year, deposited quarterly into ClassWallet. Here is what one three-credit college course looks like against a typical balance.

One college course, real transferable credit Typical annual award: $7,000 to $8,000

4x

Deposits per year. Funds land in ClassWallet quarterly, so there is a fresh balance every few months.

100,000+

Arizona students are enrolled in the ESA program, the second largest in the nation.

$0

Out of pocket. Direct Pay sends funds from ClassWallet straight to PrereqCourses. You never front the tuition.

College courses your teen can take right now

Every course is delivered fully online, self-paced, and awards credit through Upper Iowa University on an official transcript. Two popular tracks for ESA families:

Why PrereqCourses qualifies

Arizona's ESA statute spells out the expense categories families can spend on. College coursework through PrereqCourses fits squarely inside them.

Postsecondary tuition and fees

Qualified ESA expenses include tuition and fees at an eligible postsecondary institution, plus required textbooks. Credit for every PrereqCourses course is awarded through Upper Iowa University, a regionally accredited university.

Nonpublic online learning programs

The statute separately covers tuition and fees for nonpublic online learning programs. PrereqCourses is a fully online, self-paced program, purpose-built for students learning from home.

Approved ClassWallet vendor

PrereqCourses is registered and approved as a vendor in Arizona's ClassWallet system, so invoices flow through the official Direct Pay process the Department of Education already uses.

Clear, itemized invoices

Every invoice lists the course name, subject, and credit hours, so the educational purpose is obvious to the reviewer. That keeps approvals clean and predictable.

Credit that colleges actually accept

  • Credit awarded through Upper Iowa University, accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
  • Grades post to an official university transcript your student can send anywhere
  • Courses designed to transfer toward degree requirements at colleges nationwide
  • Self-paced format: new starts the 1st of every month, finish on your student's schedule
  • Real faculty grading and support, not automated multiple choice

What "HLC-accredited" means for your family

The Higher Learning Commission is one of the major institutional accreditors recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. It accredits universities like the University of Arizona and Arizona State.

Because credit is awarded through an HLC-accredited university, it carries the same institutional standing as credit earned on a campus. When your student applies to college, these credits arrive on a real university transcript.

Arizona ESA FAQ

Is college coursework really an eligible ESA expense?

Yes. Arizona's ESA statute lists tuition and fees at an eligible postsecondary institution, required textbooks, and tuition for nonpublic online learning programs among qualified expenses. Each purchase is reviewed by the Department of Education when you submit the invoice through ClassWallet.

How long does invoice approval take?

Plan on one to two weeks for the Department of Education to review a Direct Pay invoice, sometimes faster. We recommend submitting a few weeks before you want your student to start. Once payment is released, your student is enrolled in the next monthly start; courses begin the 1st of each month, so there is never a long wait for a semester to come around.

Can a high school student really take college courses?

Yes. Our courses are self-paced and built for independent learners, and motivated high school students complete them successfully every term. There is no separate university admissions process to enroll in a course.

Will these credits transfer?

Credits are awarded through Upper Iowa University, which is HLC-accredited, and post to an official university transcript. Transfer decisions always rest with the receiving college, but regionally accredited general education credit is the most widely accepted category of transfer credit there is. We are happy to help you check a specific college's transfer policy before enrolling.

Do I pay anything out of pocket?

No. With Direct Pay, funds move from your ClassWallet account to PrereqCourses after the Department of Education approves the invoice. You never front the tuition or wait on a reimbursement.

What if my student's remaining ESA balance doesn't cover a full course?

Deposits arrive quarterly, so a new installment may cover it soon. Contact us and we will help you plan the enrollment around your deposit schedule.

What happens if we need a refund?

Refunds of ESA-funded purchases are returned to your student's ESA account through ClassWallet, in line with program rules. Our full refund policy is published on our site.
